¿QUÉ ES KATI BASTI?

Kati Basti is derived from Sanskrit, where "Kati" means lower back and "Basti" means a compartment that retains medicated oil or decoctions. In Ayurveda, Basti refers to a bladder that holds urine temporarily until urination. Similarly, in Kati Basti therapy, a compartment is formed to retain warm medicated oil for a specific duration before it is poured out. This therapy is highly effective for alleviating lower back pain, covering the lumbar and sacral regions, by using an oil-filled cabin made from gram flour dough.

BENEFITS OF KATI BASTI

The herbal oil deeply penetrates the skin, nourishing and strengthening the muscles and ligaments.

2. Alleviates low back pain

Kati Basti therapy is particularly effective for reducing pain in the lower back.

3. Reduces stiffness

Helps in reducing stiffness in back muscles.

4. Decreases swelling and inflammation

Effectively reduces swelling and inflammation in the lower back.

5. Improves blood circulation

Enhances blood flow in the lower back region.

6. Treats various conditions

HOW IS KATI BASTI PERFORMED?

A) PRE-PROCEDURE

1. Examination

The individual's *prakriti* (constitution) and *vikriti* (imbalance) are assessed to determine the type of oil to be used and the duration of the treatment.

2. Preparation

Pinda Swedana (a type of fomentation) is administered for a few days before starting Kati Basti.

B) MAIN TREATMENT

1. Positioning: The patient lies in a prone position, ideally on an empty stomach.

2. Formation of Cabin: A dough made from gram flour is shaped into a cabin to hold the medicated oil.

3. Application of Oil: Warm medicated oil is poured into the cabin. The oil is recycled throughout the process to maintain its temperature.

C) POST-TREATMENT

1. Removal of Oil: The oil is slowly removed.

2. Massage: A gentle massage is performed on the treated area.

3. Pinda Swedana: Administered again for enhanced benefits.

4. Rest and Bath: The patient rests for a while before taking a hot water bath.
